Statement

My work examines wealth inequality, systemic injustices, pop culture, and mental health through the lens of my experience as a Black queer woman raised in the Midwest. I am primarily a text-based artist and use a variety of mediums including hand embroidery, painting, and soft sculpture techniques. A lifelong love of media informs the eye-catching, color-saturated, and message-based nature of most of my work. My pieces often jump sporadically between a range of subjects and feelings–echoing the experience of browsing through a smartphone, magazine, or channels on a television. In an age of continuous scrolling & shortened attention spans, the densely-patterned and color-soaked presentation of my work is meant to entice the viewer forward in an invitation to explore something deeper.
